LGBT group to protest on Valentine’s Day

A University of Wyoming student group plans to host a demonstration on Valentine’s Day to support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues and to protest marriage inequality in Wyoming.

While most married couples are celebrating their unions with flowers, chocolate and romantic dinners, the UW Queer Advocacy Network (QAN) and its supporters will be marching for marriage equality and protesting two bills that would direct Wyoming courts to not recognize same-sex marriages, civil unions and domestic partnerships performed in other states.

“In light of all the stuff that’s going on in the Legislature right now, we decided that we should probably make a statement,” UW student Jeremy Adkins, the founder and president of QAN, said. “We figured the best way to make that statement is by having a protest.”

In addition to marching, a handful of married or civilly joined same-sex couples will explain how passage of the anti-gay marriage bills would affect their families.

Currently, Wyoming does not grant marriages, civil unions or domestic partnerships to same-sex couples, but the state does recognize them if they are performed out of state.
