24 04 2009

On April 15, women’s club traditional Wednesday discussion took place at Inclusive Foundation office. The event was organized by Women’s Initiatives Supporting Group (WISG) and the topic of the discussion was: Women in Christian tradition.

The facilitator of the Women’s club (Women’s Initiatives Supporting Group representative) interestingly discussed the role and the place of a woman in Christianity in a wide context. She paid attention to a church role, as on social institute, which decisively influenced on the women’s subordinated position in Christian cultures and importantly contributed in strengthening of discrimination against women.

To make the whole picture, besides quoting from the Bible and the Acts of the Apostles, the reporter dealt with opinions of Saint Augustine and Thomas of Aquin, the works of whom played an important part in formation of Western Christian traditions. The quoting from various texts with light-headed and absurd opinions about women was accompanied with adequate reactions and irony from the audience.

The reporter also discussed the repressive policy of the church and the wedding institute in historical and modern contexts.

While discussing the situation in Georgia, the reporter underlined the historical traditions that remain in mountain places of the country, where the different approach is expressed towards women sexuality and the institute of wedding.

The audience was greatly attentive to the discussion and the topic appeared a lot topical for the members of women’s club. They expressed the wish to discuss the issue not only in culturological, but in the religious context in further and invite the person with theological education for that.

After the discussion, the members of the women’s club continued communication in informal atmosphere.
