Women World Leaders Fighting for LGBT Equality

TIME Magazine is out with a list of 10 women who are changing the planet and who are working fast and furious for LGBT equality.

Among their notable leaders, of most powerful women, is Iceland Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir. In addition to being one of the most popular politicians in Iceland, Sigurdardottir is the world's first openly LGBT head of state. Earlier this year, after Iceland moved to recognize marriage equality, Sigurdardottir married her long-time partner, novelist Jónína Leósdóttir.

But Sigurdardottir isn't the only LGBT champion among TIME Magazine's list. Argentinas’ president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner earned some major plaudits earlier this year, when she stood up to anti-gay leaders in her own country, including the institutional Catholic Church, to trumpet marriage equality for Argentina's LGBT population.

The list of TIME Magazine's top 10 women is not all full of allies. Take, for nstance, Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla, who adamantly opposed same-sex marriage in her campaign for the presidency earlier this year. There's also newly-elected Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who has the distinction of being one of the world's most prominent atheist leaders, yet who herself believes that gay marriage is against natural law.
